Literature with Mr. R

February 6, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today I went to visit Mr. R’s ESL 10th grade literature class.  It was very exciting because I have never had the opportunity to sit in on an English Language Learning class.  The students were very friendly and welcoming.  Today they read a story called Delicious Death.  The story was about a fifteen year old boy who wanted to go hunting with his friends, but his mother was afraid to let him go because he was so young.  The story was about eating the food that you kill and thanking a higher power each time you kill food to eat.  The goal was to compare and contrast the story with another story they had read last week.  In the other story a group of hunters had gone to South America to kill boars for sport.  In the end they were killed by the boars.  The students discussed the merits of each story and the differences between the two stories.  The interesting part of the class for me was that the students who read the poem aloud in English and then discuss the poem in Spanish with Mr. R translating words they did not understand.  The process was very interesting to observe.  I am glad I had the opportunity!

I love being at Awesome High School.  The field experience is invaluable.  The thing that I have enjoyed the most has been the classroom observations.  I observed a class called World Beliefs being taught by an amazing and very inspiring teacher (Ms. Runberg).  The students’ were discussing the movie The Matrix and comparing what they watched to Plato’s The Cave Analogy.  The teacher was well prepared and she gave the student’s a pre-reading task, a during reading task, and then had questions they were suppossed to complete after their reading.  They were suppossed to write the answers to their questions in their “philosophers journal”.  The class was well behaved and appeared very interested in the lecture.  I later learned that this class was an elective that the students try very hard to get into.

I really enjoy adding everything to my portfolio.  The thought that I can go back and use all these wonderful ideas later in my own classroom is very exciting!

I am really enjoying being at Awesome High School.  It is such a great experience to walk through the hallways and be connected to the students I will be teaching.  All my previous classroom experience has involved me sitting in a classroom, but this is such a tangible experience.  It is so real and helps me to have a much greater understanding of what it will be like in the school I will be teaching.
